Riding is one of the most dangerous things you can
do. The UK
DOT thinks that bikers have 121 deaths
or bad injuries per 100K miles, compared with 2.6 for cars.
See our National Website for our group riding guidelines, and BikeSafer.com site for lots more on bike safery.
There isn't a lot of current US research
on bike safety. The Hurt Report is old, but the American
Motorcycle Association (AMA) has started a new
study. We'll wait for better numbers.
In the meantime, the best information we have is that 50%
of bike crashes happen when drivers enter the right of way of
the rider from the front, not seeing the bike until too late.
Another issue is lack of training on the part of
the rider, which is a major cause of accidents and and worsens the effect of
many other crashes.
We are out to have fun, but there is no worse buzz-kill
than having to go to the emergency room.
We have three major areas of things we do to improve
safety.
(1)
We ride in groups. A large group of riders
is easy to see, and if it is organized, it gets more respect.
We have guidelines on the National Website and we have very experienced road captains
and tail gunners.
(2) We care about our members safety when riding solo, so
we recommend the Motorcycle Safety
Foundation basic and advanced rider courses to all our members.
(3) We encourage many other safety-related practices,
including equipment, bike maintenance and accident reponse
training. Click the 'Forum' link above and scroll to the safety
section for more.
Our
safety officer helps to keep safety issues in front of the membership and works
with other SCRC groups and outside organizations to promote safety
training.
Ride safe, y'all.
